Brussels sprouts are one of those vegetables that just keep giving. Once you know when to pick and how to snap them off, harvest takes about 60 seconds per plant.
How to Harvest
Start at the bottom of the stalk and work your way up. Lower sprouts mature first. Twist each one and snap it off clean — no tools needed.
- Firm and tight: ready to pick
- Loose leaves spreading out: wait a bit longer
- About 1 inch across: the sweet spot for flavor
Start from the bottom and work up. The stalk keeps producing as you harvest, so you get multiple rounds off the same plant.
Tips
- Leave the small ones at the top — come back in a week
- After harvest, strip the lower leaves off the stalk so the plant puts energy into the remaining sprouts
- Cold snaps actually sweeten Brussels sprouts — a light frost is a good thing
